Right well it looks like my brilliant idea is going ahead 😊 (I’m full of them you know Dave!), so I thought I’d give a bit of an update of where we’ve got to so far, and try and narrow down the field as to the figure we will all be painting.
Okay so first off I’ll cover when it looks like this will actually happen, a couple of people have asked if we can do it later in the year, which is fine by me (I’m thinking September unless anyone has any objections/better suggestions).
Next we turn to where we’ll get the figure in question from, we’ve had a few offers/suggestions and the three best options in my opinion are…
Dave Stone, has offered to sculpt a figure for this which is incredibly kind of him, it would be really cool to have one of Dave’s resin sculpts (he would then sell it through his business after of course). He’s also offered to just charge £1.00 for said figure plus postage costs, to people taking part, again very kind. The main problem with this is of course postage costs to overseas, I don’t know how much postage to the US or Australia would be (we have people taking part from both), but it would depend on whether it is prohibitive cost wise to just send one figure around the globe, Overseas people what do you think?
Option two is a 3D print, and Simon Moore has been kind enough to extend the same offer as Dave with this option, the problem here is that Simon doesn’t hold the retail rights to the STL files he subscribes too so he could only print free files, this would greatly reduce the options of what figures we can have access too, and the same postage issues as above. We could of course all just just purchase the figures from Etsy or whoever, or if you have a printer the STL files and print your own, but this leaves the issue of the quality of the prints/scale, from different sellers, but what do you lot think?
Third option is to get a figure from a worldwide seller with a good range of single figure sculpts. I have to admit the first name that sprung to my mind (and Keith’s) was Reaper Miniatures (I’m assuming they are available in Australia?) thought here are of course other option here. As I can see the main issue with this would be finding a Reaper figure that Matt (if he takes part) doesn’t already own! 😁
I would like to know your opinions of these options, which do you prefer?
Now turning to the miniature itself, Harry has recently posted a piece on “Computer Generated Fantasy Art”, with this you enter key words as to what you want and the computer generates a suitable image (follow the link to get a better explanation of this), but I thought we could use something similar to determine what sort of figure we want, so if you can take one word from each row below
1, Fantasy Human / Sci/Fi Human / Fantasy Monster / Alien or Robot
2.Fully Armoured / Part Armoured / Fatigues, Uniform / Savage, Native
3. Heavy weapon / Ranged weapon / Melee weapon / Unarmed
4. Your option, one more word that describes what you want….Wizard, Female, Dwarf, Survivor, Bounty Hunter whatever…
So if you are still interested in taking part please let me know your preferred option on where we get the figure, along with your four words and once I know the most popular I’ll either pass it on to Dave/Simon or start looking for that figure!
Till next time (when I really promise to have some painted figures to show you!). Cheers Roger.
Don’t mind on the option of where we get it from, as for the four words alien, part armoured, ranged weapon, mercenary, hope this helps and doesn’t make it even more confusing ! LOL
Haha thanks Dave, I think you are still very much in the running mate, as for your choices you might be sculpting it anyway!
Cheers Roger.
I am good to pay shipping from across The Pond. Having a mini sculpted for this group of around-the-world-mates is too cool to pass up.
From those prompts i will say fantasy monster/savage/unarmed/melee. Some eldritch horror that doesnt mind getting up-close and bloody.
thanks Harry, interesting choices, a monster might be a fun thing to paint, does leave a lot of colour option available.
Cheers Roger.
Hmm….
1. I’m good with any of the choices for where we get the miniature.
2. Prompts: Fantasy Human, Savage, Savage, Pit-Fighter
Thanks Eric, a Pit fighter or Gladiator would be different, good choices.
Cheers Roger.
While Reaper would be easiest and most cost-effective, I also think that having a unique Dave-sculpted mini just for participants in this challenge is way too cool to pass up. And just because Dave is being generous (as is his wont) and only charging us a pound (whatever my exchange rate is), doesn’t mean we can’t order MORE stuff from Dave to make the shipping worthwhile. I for one have my eye on some Dave stuff I missed last time around…
As for the next part, the prompts, I should stress that I will paint anything, so feel free to discount my choices in favor of anyone else’s. I’ll say Alien/Fatigues/Unarmed/ Morn from Deep Space 9; but that’s just because I want Dave to sculpt a Morn miniature for me, and I’m selfish.
I guess in the interest of taking OTHERS into consideration (Pfui!), I’ll say alien/fatigues/ melee weapon/Jedi.
But again, I’ll paint anything.
Thanks Keith, yeah I think all three options as to where we get it from have advantages be it ease of getting or as you say a Dave sculpt is very cool. as for your choices well the first three are fine but as for Morn, cool as that might be (I had to look him up) it doesn’t leave a lot of room for self expression as to colours now does it! 😞 Now something in the Star Wars style (though not an actual character could be fun and useful to a lot of you too.
Oh and I think the exchange rate is pretty close to £1 =1$ these days.
Cheers Roger.
Expression shmexpression. I want a Morn! 🙂 (Think Dave does commissions?)
Funnily enough Keith, I do do commissions ! LOL
Excuse me you two, would you kindly conduct your business elsewhere! I’m not running a dating site here you know! 😁
I’m in for this one! Reaper would be my No1 choice, but I understand the postage issues sending them to the UK or Oz. In the US at least, Noble Knight sells a large range of figures from many companies including those based in Britain, such as Crooked Dice and others.
I know I’ve been overbanging this drum recently, but what about Etsy? Many stores based all over the world sell the same ranges of minis, they vary in price but are relatively cheap (especially compared to GW), and there’s a huge variety available. Just my two cents… er, I mean pence.
As for the type of figure, I’m up for anything (oooer) but I’ll pick Fantasy Monster / Fully Armoured / Melee Weapon / horrible.
Thanks Matt, but I think Reaper are available over here (I know they are!) and I’m pretty sure the same can be said for Australia 😁 but are there any Reaper figures you haven’t already painted mate?😁
Yeah I’d thought of Etsy, never bough anything myself, I was just a little worried about the print quality from some of the sellers as so many of them just show the STL’s.
Monsters are doing well so far, it’ll be interesting to see where this goes.
Cheers Roger.
I’m a droid, fully armoured, ranged weapon, old tech (think steam-powered) sort of person but I’d go with anything! I’m not going to get upset at what the figure is, even though the rest of you collect figures in the wrong scales (not you Roger! Yay, 20mm)! 😉
Haha, Thanks John but haven’t I seen those choices in figures on your blog recently? 🤔😅
I was thinking about this, if we did go down the Etsy route and get 3D prints there is the possible option of you ordering one in 20mm scale, I might even allow this (perhaps). 😁
Cheers Roger.
Thanks Roger, but I’m happy to go along with 28mm for this challenge!
I’m so far behind of late Roger that I’m sure I’ve missed something here but for me the simple answer is I’ll paint anything so more than happy to go with the flow. I’m a metal guy buy who knows, this might see me paint something in resin!
Thanks Dave and good to have you involved mate, well this rules out anything with stripes or heraldic designs (on shields and such) as we just can’t live we you in that department! 😁
Could be metal, could be bones plastic, or resin, or 3D printer resin. all options are still in play at present. 😀
Cheers Roger.
I’m willing to give this a go with everyone else. I’d prefer to support Dave Stone over Reaper. (I’m in Australia, willing to pay postage.)
Words: Fantasy Monster, Part-armoured, Melee Wpn, Whatever!
Thanks Tarmor and welcome aboard, another vote for monster, and with armour, this does seem to be an early leader.
Cheers Roger.
Sounds like fun, I’d like to participate as well! My preferred option is definitely a sculpt by Dave, but I’m happy with the other ones as well. Regarding the words: Fantasy Monster, Savage, Heavy Weapon, Hungry
Thanks Snapfit, sorry for the late reply, you are of course most welcome to join the fun, hungry that sounds like it could be fun to sculpt! (if we go that way).
Cheers Roger.
Told one of my colleagues at work about this challenge and he says he’d be up for that! I could feature his figure on my blog when it’s done! Would that still be an OK thing to do for the challenge do you think? I know it’s still early days in deciding how this all may pan out but I thought I’d float the question (good management speak there)!
Well John, I know this is still in the embryonic stage at the moment, and were just throwing stuff at the board at present to see what sticks, and of course the roll out isn’t till later in the year so we’ll be putting this on the back burner for a while, probably till after staycation time is over, but it’s good that your being proactive about this and checking future customer focus, yet still touching home base before you run with the ball to far.
In other words yes this is fine with me, the more the merrier mate. 😉
Cheers Roger.
OK, thanks Roger! 🙂 I view it as your baby and don’t want to tread on anyone’s toes!
Bit late to the party on this one, Roger, but I would cwrtainly like to take part. Not overly fussy regarding genre, etc. so not going to add more kindling to the fire. All I will say is that whatever miniature is finally chosen needs to be detailed/interesting enough to provide inspiration. If it’s an unarmed bald guy ina jumpsuit, for example, you might end up with a lot of prisoner paint jobs.
Thanks Jez, not late just fashionably …well Ok late 😁, you are of course very welcome however jumpsuit wasn’t one of the options mate so I think might be alright on that score (unless you’ve only mentioned it because you really want one! 🤔).
The trouble with this hobby is the people who do it are too bloody nice and no one wants to force their opinion on anyone else, great when you are looking for friends but a bugger when you are trying to decided something like this! 🤣🤣🤣
Cheers Roger.
Hey Roger,
1. Dave Stone all the way.
2. Anything as long as it’s not a naked dude.
Cool?
Thanks Mark, you sir are always cool, but I’m afraid I can’t confirm or deny whether Dave is naked or not when he sculpts!
Cheers Roger.
I think you’re being as you Brits say, “cheeky”, which for me as an American always brings up the image of, well, butt cheeks! 🤪🤪😀😆
I’ve been practising working on exposed blue veins on models lately…
There’s no answer to that!
Stay tuned to my posts… 🫣
😬😬😬
😁
I reckon I’d prefer something cool from Dave regardless.
I also just checked Reaper’s site and they no longer offer free shipping to AU, so that makes them trickier than they were before (used to order on and off) I think the free shipping was @AU$100 or something like that.
As for what to paint? I don’t mind, as long as it’s something cool. Something monster-y or something humanoid with some clean armoured lines or exposed musculature.
Okeydokey, looks like it will be a Dave sculpt tbh, I add you to the list! (there is no list by the way) 😁
Cheers Roger.
Roger, add me to this madness if you would? I would LOVE to paint up a Dave sculpt and see others’ take on it too.
Cheers,
– Dai
No problem Dai, you’re on the list (there is still no actual list by the way)😁
Cheers Roger
