Okay so no figures this week (I’ve been lazy to be honest), so what am I posting for I hear you ask? Well I’ve been thinking (always a dangerous pastime for me!) and I’ve come up with a sort of idea that I thought I’d throw out there to you lot to get your opinions and suggestions.
The other day I was absently scrolling back through some of my posts when I came upon “Betty, Space Heroine”, now I know that Matt has also painted her (that’s where I saw her first), and Keith has since also posted a pic of his version over on his “Discord” channel, both of which are very nice by the way. Now I love seeing other people’s versions of figures I own myself and this got me thinking (as I’ve already said), wouldn’t it be fun to have all the members of our little community paint the same figure in our own inimitable styles and then showcase them all in the one post? Well would it? I’m asking you lot.
We could call it the “Paint what we’ve all got challenge!” (Sorry Dave hope you haven’t got copy write on that 😉).
Now I’d like a little input on this, first of all…
- Is it a good idea? Or am I just urinating into the wind here?
- When would be a good time to do this? I’m thinking a month when there are no other challenges, plus of course we’d all need chance to get the relative figure.
- What figure? I was thinking 28mm fantasy of sci/fi as that’s where most of our interest seems to lie.
- From Where? This is the big one to be honest, and I’m very open to suggestions here, it needs to be easy to get hold of worldwide as obviously many of us are overseas, and preferably relatively cheap (so that rules out GW, or does it?).
- Who hosts it? Well I’d be happy to host this and collect the relative pics of the painted mini’s and do the round-up post on here, unless someone else wants to, which I’d also be fine with.
That’s my thoughts on this but this but this is very much in the embryotic stage at the moment, so all of the above are open to change, if you think of a better suggestion, and of course it might just be a daft idea, we can have a laugh at and move on (if that’s what you think, say it I’m happy to take criticism, though be aware I can delete comments! 😠).
Anyway let me know what you think through the comments, and we’ll see where we go from there (if anywhere).
Till next time (when I promise to have some figures to show). Cheers Roger.
I’m game for it Roger, Simon, Bryan, Andy, and myself did something similar many moons ago, with A Tweek model I sculpted. As for the model I could sculpt something, then people would only have to pay postage, as that will vary world wide, as for the subject, I’ll leave that to the rest of you.
Thanks Dave, I remember that. That’s a really kind offer mate, and it would be great to have something specially for the challenge (though you would of course sell it after through your company). Just charging postage too is a very kind offer though I wouldn’t want you to be out of pocket.
Cheers Roger.
We could always do a token £1 for the model to go towards material costs if people would be happy to, then it’s just me giving my time for free, which I would happily do.
I’d be happy with that.
and thanks again.
I’m in! A little challenge would get me painting. I’ve been dealing with an ice storm and a flooded basement amod other challenges to finding time to paint. So a little challenge woukd be a great motivator.
I’m open to any model. Something Dave sculpts seems super cool. Open to any genre, just throwing out that a Pulp fig is a possibility as well. Not that a third option helps at all.
Thanks Harry, great to have you on board (if we set sail that it), sorry to hear of your domestic and natural woes mate, I had noticed you’d been a little quiet for a while, but didn’t like to be nosey mate. Glad you OK though.
Pulp would of course also be a good consideration, I would say I think something a little more generic might be better than something based on a well known of franchised character, simply because it gives more scope to be creative with the painting. To this end a monster of alien type figure might be a consideration?
Just spitballing here though.
Cheers Roger.
That’d be a good consideration. Aliens come in all colors and would give each participant an open canvas, so to speak.
Not for me chief – I’m struggling to paint a thing atm!
No problem mate, no pressure.
Cheers Roger
I second that. Sounds fun though Rog
No problem Luke, I know you’re buy.
Cheers Roger.
Buy? Or Bi ? Or Bye? Hahaha
I’m gonna go with the short version of “busy guy” haha
It was busy, but hey who am I to judge mate. 😉
Cheers Roger.
Definitely in, Roger. I remember that Tweek model with great affection. I’ve dropped/repaired/super-glued the little fella several times, as a result of drops during games. Easily my fave of Dave’s sculpts tbh.
Happy to pay costs & P&P for a Dave sculpt – as long as its not one of his ruddy feathered dragons or some other highly detailed piece which’ll take me aeons to pigment. LOL!!!
Thanks Simon, half thought you’d suggest a print rather than a sculpt 😁.
I certainly hope no one wants a blooming great dragon as the piece (and I guess Dave doesn’t too now he’s said we can have it for a pound! 🤣🤣).
As I said I’m open to suggestions as to what people fancy painting. an Alien bounty hunter might be fun though, and would fit into many game systems.
Cheers Roger.
Spookily I was thinking I could provide some 3D prints. But all the companies I buy from are very clear that they sell the STLs to me for personnel use only – so when people ask I always say no. You can buy licences from them etc. But they’re more expensive than the Patreon levels I support.
Having said that there are plenty of free sculpts out there on “Thingiverse” etc so I could always select one of those, or reach out to one of the companies for a one-off agreement – say one of the Dr Who cartoony sculpts or some such. Let me know if you fancy that. Depending on numbers I’d probably only be looking at P&P from those participating.
Thanks for the offer mate, and we’ll definitely keep it in mind, as I said above to Harry in some ways a more generic non franchise figure might be better as you don’t go in with predetermined colours in mind, but we’ll see what people fancy doing when we sort out the details.
Cheers Roger.
Sounds like a good idea to me, particularly in light of Dave’s offer! I’d just have a go at painting something for the hell of it, since both the scale and subject probably wouldn’t fit in with anything I’d normally do! Let’s be honest – I don’t paint anything bigger than 20mm scale, so if I paint something it saves someone else the worry of having painted the worst mini! 😉
Thanks John it would be great to have you on board mate, I paint nearly everything “for the hell of it” these days 😉. Just think of a 28mm figures as a cross between a man and a tank and the size will make sense! 🤣🤣
Don’t worry about yours being the worst mini, it’s not a competition (I’ve made sure of that so I don’t have to worry about that myself!).
Cheers Roger.
Hey now this sounds like a fun idea! Count me in!
Great Eric, any suggestions on figures or genre’s?
Cheers Roger.
I’m open to most anything, other than GW’s stuff, that’s just not my jam, unless we’re talking Guard or ‘Nids.
No I doubt if will be GW stuff tbh. We have had a couple of suggestion so far, but stay tuned as hopefully we’ll get it down to a few and then we might have a vote on it.
Cheers Roger.
1. Is it a good idea? Or am I just urinating into the wind here?
I think the former is a great idea. Happy to join in. Can’t tell about the latter but just face down wind!
2. When would be a good time to do this? I’m thinking a month when there are no other challenges, plus of course we’d all need chance to get the relative figure.
Happy for any time with enough warning to get the figure.
3. What figure? I was thinking 28mm fantasy of sci/fi as that’s where most of our interest seems to lie.
Sounds good to me.
4. From Where? This is the big one to be honest, and I’m very open to suggestions here, it needs to be easy to get hold of worldwide as obviously many of us are overseas, and preferably relatively cheap (so that rules out GW, or does it?).
Not interested in supporting GW any more. I would suggest anything from North Star https://www.northstarfigures.com/ where there are large numbers in stock There mail order is reliable, they have a huge range and you can get many individual figures. CP Miniatures is the same https://cpmodels.co.uk/index.htm. My suggestions would be this from CP Models https://cpmodels.co.uk/shop/grm09-dire-grem-with-heavy-weapon/, or anything from Dave as we should support out fellow bloggers.
5. Who hosts it? Well I’d be happy to host this and collect the relative pics of the painted mini’s and do the round-up post on here, unless someone else wants to, which I’d also be fine with.
Your poison your hosting!
Another great idea coming from Roger……………………………….did I really say that out loud?!
Thanks Dave, so I’ll count you in as a definite maybe then 😁. Thanks for answering all the questions (only one who has 😉), and good suggestions for possible figures, like the supporting fellow bloggers idea too.
I think I’ll do a follow up post to this in a few days and try and try and pin down what people want, (we could just get something from “Brother Vinny” and they would all just be variations of flesh tone! 🤣🤣, just kidding). I think Harry might just have provided the solution to this….
Oh and with the wind! why didn’t I think of that!
I do have good ideas some times, and I like trying new things too, just last week I entered a blindfolded masturbation contest. I’ve no idea where I came though! 🤣🤣🤣
Cheers Roger.
Yep I am a definite maybe!
😁
Hi Roger, I like the idea but suggest putting it sufficiently late in the year so that we could all get Dave’s model in time. As for genre, I’m open. SO, tentatively I’m in as long as my golf schedule allows (in better weather) 😁
Thanks Mark, yep no problem with putting further back in the year, September is free for me , so we could go then, or even December apart from the Xmas post making that month a bit more awkward. But we’ll have to hack out the details first so I can’t see it happening in the next month or two at present anyway.
Cheers Roger.
No worries – just want to be supportive!
You always are mate!
I am in, assuming I can do ANYTHING anymore.
I would love to paint anything sculpted by Dave (I have, in fact!) and I’ll buy anything with sufficient notice and motivation.
Here in the US, Reaper minis are inexpensive (especially Bones) and offer thousands of possibilities across genres; Nolzur’s are readily available and inexpensive but pretty much confined to fantasy. I understand these may not be as easily obtainable or cheap in other parts of the world. Quite the reverse is true for many awesome British companies, like North Star, Crooked Dice and Heresy…we can’t genreally get them here easily, and the shipping is just fucking stupid.
Conversely, although universally pricey all around, GW stuff is also available almost anywhere. I’ve got no love for GW and I don’t play their games any more; but it’s something to consider as far as everyone having access to the same miniature (without involving Dave, of course).
Great to have you on board mate, I did think of Reaper myself (mind you I think of Reaper Mini’s quite a lot these days anyway😉). I have now done a follow up post, where I hope we can narrow down so of the particulars and turn this vague idea into a viable challenge. (though normally it’s just a case “you wanna do this?”, “Yeah OK” and off we go! 😂😂).
Cheers Roger.
😁
