“Three Wheels on My Wagon” (Season of Scenery)

Cars count, Dave Stone said so, therefore I’m counting this toward my output for this years “Season of Scenery”. The other month I went to “Phalanx” wargames show, not because I really wanted anything but more just to get out, and do something “normal” (normal for us not “normal” for the “normal” people😉), and though a good time was had by all (well me), I didn’t spend a lot of money. I did come back with a second hand copy of “Robo Rally” (a board game I have been after for years!), a figure (yes one!), that will be going in my advent calendar for this year (more on this nearer the time), and two little three wheeled vehicles from a new company “Kore” (not to be confused with “I Kore”, the now defunct originators of Celtos)  Now I was told on the day that both this and the other car I picked up were based on actual classic electric vehicles, but a quick “google” search just brought up this image 👈 and no information, but it is pretty close so I’m going to say this is what the original 3D render was based on.

Though cast in resin the slight “graduations” could be seen here and there, along with a line along the top of the car/windscreen where the mould “joint” was slightly off, but a little filing and sanding pretty much took care of this, and it was out for a coat of matt black. This was mistake number one as I had no idea what colour I was going to paint it and after much head scratching (which reminds me I must buy flee powder!), I decided on cream and red, so a white undercoat would have been so much easier! Still luckily my coffee paint that would form the base coat for the cream covers very well over black, so on this went, and then, not so much highlights, but basically an almost complete repaint with cream went over this.   For the red I first undercoated the wings in pink burgundy, then like the cream before I covered this in bright red, looking at it however I felt it needed “more” so added the “slash” of red at the rear in the same colours, I’ll just add that it was a pain in the “bum” getting these lines crisp and equal, and entailed a lot of touching up. In fact touching up was very much a theme for this whole vehicle, every time I painted anything on it I’d end up marking the bits I’d already done! Anyway next on the list were the bumpers and trims, chainmail was my friend here, I added the number plate in white with some black letters and some orange took care of the indicators.

Glass, now regular readers will be aware, that I’m not a fan of painting glass on vehicles, for many years I just left it black, and wherever possible (like my “wasteland” vehicles) I’ll cover it with a “mesh” or “grill”, I did even consider “Mad Max’ing” this car, but you couldn’t really see the “Humungus” tearing up the highway in this now could you? (Well you lot would! But I couldn’t), so I was going to have to paint the glass, but how? Youtube threw up a couple of suggestions, and I went with this from “Miniature Landscape Hobbies” though he is painting what looks like 20mm WW2 lorries the technique should transfer right? (I’ll let you judge the results 🤔).

So once the windows had all been repainted black, I went in with the navy blue, then the royal blue, ocean blue, a mix of blue grey and porcelain blue (blue grey wasn’t “blue” enough for me) for the first “arch”, mid grey for the arch highlight and white “dots”, as per the Youtube instructions. Be gentle with me, it’s my first attempt 🙏. Once dry the whole lot got a coat of “Quickshade” light tone, and I could have left it there, I did think about masking the windows and matt varnishing it, but I quite liked the “glossy” finish as I thought it suited it (please don’t tell Simon, or I’ll never hear the end of it! 🤫), so I just dry-brushed some khaki around the lower edges to add a little “road dirt” (well I couldn’t leave it clean now could I!😉). I dug out “Dee Dee” and “Jessica” for the photo’s to show the scale and add a little “Brochure Glamour”. I hope to get one more car in before the end of the month, though that one isn’t quite so “cute & cuddly”.

So till next time, cheers Roger.

Excellent work roger, the colour scheme suits the shape perfectly, and has a very retro Sci-Fi feel to the vehicle. I’m pretty sure I’ve seen one of these in real life at one of the many car shows I got taken to as a kid. For a first attempt at doing glass mate, I think you’ve done a stellar job of it.

Looks awesome, Roger. Like you, I hate painting glass, and I usually just go for a black undercoat and either a gray or deep blue drybrush. Now I’m looking at all your different color layers and the white gleams and thinking there may be a better way to do what I’ve been doing.
    I bow to you, sir!

    • Thanks Keith, it wasn’t until I’d bought them that I realised “crap” I’m going to have to paint those windows! This is why I like the “mesh” on windscreens or toy cars with clear plastic! 😉 Still at least now if I really have to I have a reference. 😀

The other one will have to wait for a bit, as my next car luckily doesn’t have glass in the windows!

Don’t bow to me mate, bow to the glory of Youtube!

      Cheers Roger.

  3. Very nice! 🙂 The glass looks spot on to me, Roger! Depending on the colour of the vehicle (and mine are usually drab, like me) I go for a grey or blue-grey glass with highlights, but I think for a brighter coloured vehicle you’ve got this looking really good, particularly considering the glass is all compound curves! I could have shortened that to “glass looks fine” I suppose, but it wouldn’t be the same!

  4. Great work, Roger. I’d have been so tempted to just go with black windows – and then copious amounts of Gloss Varnish, LOL!!! Nice to see you succumbing to some gloss yourself now & then.!!!

The company certainly look interesting and another time I’d have certainly been taken with their sci-fi 28mm patrol deal – battle-armoured infantry with a couple of kick-ass mechs. Did they have the figures at the show too..?

    • Thanks Simon, yeah black was always my “go to” colour for windows (though without the gloss varnish), I do think this technique looks better, but I’d still rather have the clear ones on toy cars (though you then have to do the interior, and that’s a whole other kettle of fish!).

They do have some interesting stuff, they did have the 28mm patrol with them, though I’m not sure if they were or sale yet. They also have a 10 or 15mm (not sure which now), version with giant mechs and alien monsters in the pipeline that he was very excited about, a not “Pacific rim” as it were.

      Cheers Roger.

  5. Nice work Roger, the car looks very retro and cool. Reminds me of the Bond Bug three wheeler that my uncle had in the 70’s. 🙂

  6. Thanks Dave, ahh the “Bond bug” how could something so wrong be so dammed cool at the same time! a bit like the “Chopper” and the Space Hopper! 😉

    Cheers Roger.

  7. Michael Awdry says:

Well isn’t that pretty! Interesting looking company too, enjoyed looking at their website, but resisting so far. Fabulous job on the windscreen, well worth the effort.

  8. Matt says:

Very nice work on a cute vehicle, Roger, the red and white scheme is excellent! But that windscreen… wow! Very realistic reflections, I’d have just gone with black with some daubs of thinned grey over it LOL!

    • Thanks Matt, I’m not that happy with the screens to be honest, I can see how the idea works, especially when someone who knows what they are doing does it (not me!), but I still prefer the clear (toy) version better.

And sadly my “wargames” OCD wouldn’t let then mix on the table. 😁

      Cheers Roger.

  10. Fantastic Roger and you did so well with the glass. I don’t like painting it either

  11. Guru PIG says:

    Awesome paint job Roger!

  12. Looks great mate, you really pulled off the effects on the windows too 👍

  13. Azazel says:

Excellent work, Roger – especially on the window reflections. That’s the singular reason I’ve not finished a pair of vehicles that have been sititng on my desk for …I’m gonna say closing on 2 years now. I’ve really got to take the initiative after seeing your model here and get those things done!
That car reference pic looks a bit like an old-school sci-fi helmet as wel! 😀

    • Thanks Azazel, I honestly bought this and the other one I’ve still got to paint then immediately thought “Oh crap! I’m going to have to paint the windows on these!” if I’d thought beforehand I probably wouldn’t have bought them at all. 😁

With your talent, I imagine yours will look like photo’s of an actual car in the sun!

It does have a spacesuit helmet look to it doesn’t it, hadn’t noticed that till you said, now I can’t un-see it. 😀

      Cheers Roger.

      • Azazel says:

Haha thanks Roger – I think my windshields will be what’s commonly referred to as “passable for a tabletop model”. But damn. I really need to get onto getting them done. There’s a reason they’ve been sitting there for so long!

      • I don’t think I’ve ever seen anything by you that I would refer to as just “Passable for a tabletop model”, you are one of my most admired painters mate (and I ain’t just saying that!).

I’m painting another this week, so if you’ll just give people time to forget my efforts before you put me to shame I’d appreciate it. 😉

        Cheers Roger
