Right well before I begin I’d like to apologise for disappearing over the last couple of weeks, real life has reared its head and snaffled up all my time of late, so this is going to be a quick post with no painted stuff in it (sorry), I will do a Mo’vember round up in the next week or so detailing all the entries you lot have done.
Right now onto the “Challenge” mentioned in the title of this post, my wife and I were talking a few of months back about “Advent Calendars” and she asked if I’d like one this year (I have had a “Thornton’s Chocolates” one in the past (yum!!)), and I said no but it was a shame you couldn’t get one with figures in. Well resourceful gal that she is, she went and found one, from “Mighty Lancer Games” that contains 24 Reaper “Bones” figures, now this is not an official Reaper product (hence the somewhat generic look of the box), but instead is made up by MLG themselves, and so probably contains all the stuff they haven’t been able to sell! 😉
It also cost £50.00, which seems a lot (to me it did!) but I guess that is only a smidge over £2.00 a figure, so not bad really (mind you, you aren’t picking what figs you want, so I leave the final decision up to you). But anyway she bought me one (lucky boy that I am) and I have been staring at it hungrily since mid-September dying to know what’s in it! (I’ll start finding out come Wednesday), but what to do with them once I have all twenty four, well I’ve taken inspiration from Keith (Dead Dicks Tavern) who has been painting up a D&D character each month this year, so I intend to paint up two figures from this calendar each month throughout 2022, Now hopefully there will be something in there that I can also lump into our other challenges, such as Mo’vember, Monster Mayhem, Fem’bruary even possibly Dave’s Season of Scenery (I really have no idea what’s in there!) and so kill two birds with one stone (No pun intended Dave! 😁).
As they say in a famous film…..
“Life is like a box of Chocolates, you never know what you’re gonna get”, likewise I don’t know what I’m going to get in here, though it’s obviously more like a chocolate advent calendar than a box, except of course you know what you’re going to get out of a chocolate advent calendar, a piece of chocolate, so not really like that either….OK so bad analogy. But you get the idea, anyway we shall see what I get over the next twelve months.
Till next time, Cheers Roger.
Look forward to seeing what comes out of the box Roger, should be very interesting, plus I’m sure you’ll be able to find something in there for the “Paint what you got” challenge that starts Boxing day and runs until the end of January.
At Salute this year I met a mum who was creating something similar for her son, there’s a dedicated parent !
Thanks Dave, I hope so too, as I’ve got to paint two of them in January! 😁
My wife has said I’ve got to open the doors carefully so she can fill it again for the year after with figures she’s chosen for me, so expect lots of Unicorns, cats, dogs and Pegasus’s 😁
Cheers Roger.
For a second I thought you were challenging yourself to paint on mini a day till Christmas 🙂 I’m looking forward to seeing what’s in there (and how bent the Reaper Bones plastic is LOL) and you should be able to find something to enter in challenges through the year!
Thanks matt, dear god no! a figure a day! I think I’m pushing it at two a month (especially as next year is going to be a right cock-up life wise in my case, will probably be working away for three to five months 👎 ☹.
I’ve never painted a bones figure before, so that’ll be interesting 🤔 I might be picking your brains over this mate.
Cheers Roger.
It must be said, painting a mini a day is a challenge in itself (I’m having flashbacks to Monster May(hem) LOL!)
😁
Oh, and as far a Bones plastic goes, if it’s the old softer white stuff then make sure to scrub it with warm water and soap, and prime it. Reaper claims you don’t need to prime them but you absolutely do. If any bits are bent you can try the hot water/ice technique to straighten it, but I haven’t had much luck with that. Be very careful carving flash off them as it’s incredibly easy to cut, and you can end up slicing more off than you meant to. If it’s the newer harder dark grey plastic it’s way better, but still wash and prime them. Good luck!
Thanks mate, I try and remember to bear all that in mind. 😉
Head like a sieve though 😕
Cheers Roger.
I’m with Matt on this – paint a mini a day! You can do that in combination with another advent calendar containing acrylic paints, washes, contrast paints and miniature whisky bottles (hic)!
Thanks Matt (I think), as I’ve not had time to paint anything the last two weeks, I think that plan is a recipe for failure mate. 😉
Cheers Roger.
Oops…
Neat idea Roger. Like others I’m intreagued to find out what’s inside. 🙂
Thanks Dave, me too I been staring at the blooming thing for months on the side in the dining room! 😀 (I have shook it a couple of times but that tell me nothing as you can imagine! 😁).
Cheers Roger.
Great idea, Roger, especially as £50 for a blind buy is definitely a bit of a risk imho. Fingers crossed you get plenty of figs which you can use. Looking forward to seeing the first two!!!
Does this mean that I can now start working on a Top Ten for you, or are planning on anything else before this year finally plays itself out..?
Thanks Simon, I know what you mean I wasn’t sure when I saw the price, but my lovely wife went and bought me one anyway, not to worried if it’s stuff I can use as ninety percent of the stuff I buy is just coz I like it rather than if it’s useful 😉. Just hope there’s some nice figs in there to paint. there are a couple of fig’s I would love to be in there as I was seriously going to buy them soon (though probably in metal tbh), but if they are in there great, not holding my breath though.
You can start on the “Top ten” mate, I cant see me painting anything else this year now tbh. (If I do I’ll make sure it’s rubbish just for you 😁).
Cheers Roger.
What a great find. Enjoy!
Thanks Dave, my wife can find just about anything on the internet 😀.
Thank god there wasn’t internet dating back when we got together or I wouldn’t have got a look in!
Cheers Roger.

What a nice surprise! I look forward to seeing what goodies spill out of if over the coming weeks! 🙂
Thanks Azazel, well all I can say is so far I have at least one figures suitable for Fem’bruary and one for one for Mo’vember next year! 😉
Cheers Roger.
That’s pretty cool – surprises all year long! Now if you don’t like the figure, will you still paint it or grab another?
Thanks Mark, well I’ll know what all the figures are by Christmas, but what are you saying, that I’d cheat!! 😁
No sadly I’m a sad stickler to the rules of basically everything, so no if it comes out of the calendar then it will get painted (we have a car park at work with entrances and exit points, and even if I’m the last person in the car park I can’t drive out of an entrance, even though it saves time!). 😀
Cheers Roger.
You’d never cheat Roger – but the rules are yours so…
